Nagaland’s lone Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), S Supongmeren today emphasised unity as the foremost requirement for Naga political solution.
“We must come under one umbrella and chart a clear vision for the future,” he stated, addressing the introductory session of the 31st General Conference of the Naga Students' Federation (NSF), which commenced here today at the RSA Ground in Tseminyu.
Under the theme “Resilience in Transition,” the three-day event is being hosted by the Rengma Students’ Union.
“We must ask ourselves what is our vision for the future?” he noted, while pointing out the irony of discussing unity while lacking it at home and terming it “a serious issue that demands introspection.”
MP Jamir also noted that Nagaland now has one medical college in Kohima and another coming up in Mon, but lamented the lack of an engineering institution in the State.
Meanwhile, Jamir, acknowledged the contributions of NSF leaders, past and present, noting that the Federation has produced leaders in diverse fields including politics, administration, entrepreneurship, and local governance, and has played a crucial role in shaping them.
He further stressed the importance of rationalising the NSF election process to strengthen the Federation’s credibility.
The MP also called for a clear vision to lead a meaningful life: “Without vision, both in life and in organisations, parents will lose hope and students will lose confidence in leadership. We need commitment in life, and that commitment must come from within,” he added.
Stressing the importance of character and humility, he said, “Don’t try to create false amenities; instead, be good to your friends and relatives. Respect for elders and leaders is essential.”
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Atokiho Sumi, former Vice President of the NSF, with the invocation led by Besüvoto Rhakho, Pastor of CRC Chozuba Town. Benjamin Lorin, Convener COLA, delivered the welcome address, followed by greetings from Nuheymong Yimkhiung, President of the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation, and Er Tesinlo Semy, President of the Rengma Hoho.
The session concluded with self-introductions by aspiring candidates for the 2025–27 tenure, along with the Secretary's report presented by Chumben Khuvung, General Secretary, NSF. A total of 1,288 delegates are attending the 31st conference.
