MON, AUGUST 19 (MExN): The Eastern Konyak Union (EKU) said that ‘unity among Naga leaders was essential to strengthen the Naga national goals.’
In a statement issued by its media cell, the EKU commended the NSCN (IM) general secretary Th Muivah, deputy ato kilonser V S Atem, president Tuquu, Longvibu Ningkhan Shimray and the Mount Veda Peace Mission team led by Laopa, Atam Rungsung and Wangpha for working “tirelessly for Naga unity and peace.”
The statement said the celebration of the 79th Naga Independence Day on August 14 in the Eastern Konyak Naga area, observed jointly by different groups and factions for the second consecutive year, was seen as a “mark of Naga unity and peace.” The occasion also included sports and recreational activities for students, organised under the supervision of Longvibu Ningkhan Shimray.
The EKU noted that it had not participated in other Independence Day programmes, but “witnessed for the first time” Naga national workers uniting physically and morally during the August 14, 2025, celebration.
The statement also maintained that Eastern Nagaland has historically remained outside the ambit of both India and Myanmar since the 1950s when the Naga National Council declared independence. It, however, lamented that the region continues to suffer due to the presence of multiple groups and divisions.
Expressing dismay at certain Naga leaders referring to Eastern Nagas as “Myanmar or Burma people,” the EKU termed such remarks “immature and unfit for Naga leadership,” noting that even Myanmar recognises them simply as Nagas.
It appealed to all Naga leaders to continue working towards genuine peace and unity among all factions.
