DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 30 (MExN): Close on the heels of Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chattejee’s suggestion of people’s power to “recall” elected members of the representative bodies and to make them more accountable to their constituencies during term in office, the Kangtsung Village Council has issued a similar censor to T Talinungsang asking him to step down on moral grounds. The council said that the MLA had been contesting as consensus candidate of the village in 21 Tuli A/C since 1977 and had been elected for the last two decades, holding important portfolios as minister under various rsuccessive state governments. However it communicated regret that in all the years there was not a single human development that the MLA had brought within Tuli or Kangtsung village.
In the light of this fact, the council stated that the Kangtsung Senso Telongjem Mongdang (Kangtsung citizens), had after approval by majority of its citizens decided to select S Imti Jamir as it consensus candidate to contest in the coming election during its meeting on January 13, 2006. The decision is said to have been duly approved by the Reongsanger Putu Menden (Village Council Kangtsung) vide its joint meeting on February 13, 2007 and further affirmed by the Kangtsung Yimtsung Mongdang (General Public of Kangtsung Village) in the meeting on August 10, 2007.
As against the MLA’s and S Sendong’s earlier explanation that choosing S Imti Jamir, as consensus candidate, being done under pressure and without a unanimous decision, the council said that MLA Tali had also been physically present at the citizens’ meeting held on January 13 and after the subsequent approval by the general public of the village, Tali had been informed of the decision and cautioned to abide by it. However, it was alleged that MLA Tali, taking advantage of his present political status had instigated counter-attacks against the wishes and decision of Kangtsung village.
The MLA has been accused of sponsoring certain ‘anti-social’ elements who were given arms and ammunitions and sheltered at the official quarter of Lenuklepzuk, Forest Ranger, Tuli.
The press release issued by the Chairman and secretary of the council Nungkum and K Anung Lemdur stated that Tali’s men had been camped and threatening the citizens to support the MLA and despite public appeal to stop their anti-social activities and direction to vacate the place peacefully, it stated the Tali’s miscreants had shot dead Imlisenup, a citizen of the village at the behest of the MLA.
In relation to the MLA’s accusation that the deceased had been killed by the supporters of Imti Jamir, Council went on to add that the father and family of Imlisenup were witnesses to the incident and accordingly the Council has imposed a fine of 5 pigs with an ultimatum to hand over the fine within September 30 before the Reongsanger Putu Menden. The council has also issued a final warning to the MLA to abide by the decision and also to S Sendong or any individual to refrain from making any concocted statement against the Kangtsung village, failing which stern action would be initiated.
