WAPO, CPOMC, CAKU condemn Feb 13 incident, urges dialogue over violence

Kohima, February 18 (MExN): The Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) has condemned what it termed as a “barbaric” act of aggression against the president of the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) and its members by the authorities and residents of Maova village.

In a statement, WAPO described the alleged act of violence as “deeply disturbing and totally unacceptable” in a civilised society. It further stated that the reported physical assault on the CPO leadership amounted to a direct insult and aggression that “cannot be tolerated.”

At the same time, the organisation cautioned that its patience and generosity should not be tested or misconstrued as weakness, stating that its commitment to mutual respect, peaceful co-existence and open-mindedness must not be undermined.

WAPO maintained that the CPO leadership has been working in the interest of all communities under its jurisdiction and asserted that any grievances or disagreements should have been addressed through constructive dialogue.

“Resorting to violence not only endangers lives but also damages the social fabric and unity of the communities,” the statement said.

The organisation also extended support to statements issued by the Angami Public Organisation (APO) and the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO), reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice and constructive engagement.

It further urged community members to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions, and encouraged all stakeholders to resolve differences through dialogue.

CPOMC: The Chakhroma Public Organisation Medziphema Circle expressed shock and strongly condemned the incident that took place at Maova village.

In a statement, the organisation alleged that certain youths of Maova village, under the supervision of the Village Council Chairman and the Gaon Bura, carried out actions that were “unacceptable, disgraceful and contrary” to standards of decency and ethical conduct.

It stated that the incident not only caused harm to its leaders but also undermined the core values of the community, which it said are founded on mutual respect, unity and integrity.

The CPO Medziphema Circle asserted that under no circumstances can it tolerate or justify the violence and the alleged premeditated attack on its leaders, who it claimed had visited the village in goodwill and in the spirit of cooperation.

It further condemned the injuries inflicted on the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) of Medziphema sub-division and IRB personnel, who, it said, had arrived at the scene with the intention of pacifying the situation and maintaining peace.

The organisation also appealed to the Naga community to condemn the alleged atrocities against its leaders and to collectively work towards eradicating such acts to ensure a secure and better future for coming generations.

CAKU: Chakhroma Angami Kuda Union (CAKU) expressed dismay over the manner in which Maova village allegedly reacted to officials and volunteers of the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) during a visit on February 13.

The CAKU stated that it would not tolerate what it termed as insolence on the part of Maova village and urged the village authorities to reflect on the benevolence extended by the Chakhromas in the past.

At the same time, the union affirmed that it would abide by and support any steps deemed fit and necessary by the CPO in connection with the matter.
It also wished a speedy recovery to the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Medziphema, the injured IRB personnel and the CYO volunteers who sustained injuries in the incident.
