‘War in our minds: Why young people should wage peace’

The 2018 Global Peace Index report shows that the world has deteriorated in “peacefulness” more than any time in the last decades, Dr Kethoser Kevichusa, Speaker and Trainer at RZIM Life Focus Society, and Author underscored on Friday while pointing out that our “society is urgently in need of peace.”  

He was delivering the keynote address at the 6th session of the North East India International Model United Nations (NEIMUN), a residential leadership conference which got underway this evening at Don Bosco Institute, Dimapur on the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 ‘Youth, Peace & Security’ as the theme.  

Speaking on the topic “War in our minds: Why young people should wage peace”, Dr Kethoser, addressing about 300 delegates said the casualties that humanity has paid for wars throughout history in terms of military, capital and man-power accounts to losing trillions.

Opining that positive dimensions of peace has different facets at the personal, inter-personal, societal and political level, he also added that another dimension that wasn’t paid heed yet has become increasingly important and urgent are the ecological and theological dimension.  

On this note, Dr Kethoser called upon the delegates to practice peace with oneself, practice truth and truthfulness, have mercy and justice which are the pillars of peace.  

Shanavas C, DC Zunheboto, who dwelled on the topic, “The future is now: How young people help in shaping effective policies” stated that uniformed policy needs to emerge to address issues and problems realistically. He also said that our ignorance has enabled policies to get exploited where he pointed that the role of youth should be to “educate elders, encourage the younger generation and join hands and become volunteers for change.”  

Gabriella Wright, English-French Actress and Activist also delivered a video message on “Youth's role in building peace and security” and Mark Laitflang Stone, Founder and Director of Avenues, Shillong, Meghalaya conducted a practical session on “Reconnecting youths for peace and security.” Ibrahim El- Kazaz, NEIMUN Training Director and Program Manager for Best Delegate also delivered a message.  

About 300 young minds from across the country and different schools and colleges in Nagaland are attending the conference.  

The conference, which began today and will conclude on October 29, is hosted in collaboration with UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan and Best Delegate, a global resource organisation for Model United Nations based in the United States.
