The volume of water storage has improved during the last two weeks but it is still below the last year as well as annual 10-year average, updates from the Central Water Commission (CWC) informed.

According to the CWC’s weekly ‘Live storage status of 130 important reservoirs of the country’ bulletins, the water volume at the Doyang Hydro Electric Plant (HEP) increased from 0.22 billion cubic metres (BCM) on August 26 to  0.25 BCM  in September 2.

As per the latest bulletin released on September 9, the storage volume increased to 0.28 BCM.

Despite the increase, the volume of storage is still lower than corresponding period last year at 0.34 BCM.

In addition, it is -20% departure from the last 10 years average of 0.35 BCM, informed the bulletin.

However, it is a big improvement over August 26 status, when the departure from 10 years average was -36%.

The full capacity level (FRL) of Doyang HEP is 0.54 BCM.

Across India, the volume of storage as of September 9 at the 130 reservoirs was 116.97 BCM as against last year average of 143.69 BCM.

The volume is -6% departure from the last 10 year average of 124.11, the bulletin informed.

“The overall storage position is less than the corresponding period of last year in the country as a whole and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period,” it added.

The improved storage position might be reflective improved rainfall in Wokha district, the main catchment area of the Doyang River.  As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), during the period from September 2-8, Wokha recorded surplus rainfall of 2%, though the cumulative rainfall in the district during the current South West Monsoon season (from June 1-September 9) district is still under ‘Deficient’ category at -22%, departure from normal.

With some locations in the State receiving improved rainfall after September 8, the storage may improve further next week.
