The 10-day exposure-cum-hands-on training programme for farmers of Wokha district, organised by the District Administration Wokha in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Department of Agriculture, Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM), and ICAR-KVK Wokha, concluded on August 28 at the ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The programme, which commenced on August 19, was held under Mission Shakti (Beti Bachao Beti Padhao) with the objective of equipping farmers with improved scientific practices, value addition techniques, and entrepreneurship skills.

As part of the exposure, 19 farmers, including 13 women, visited two premier institutes – the ICAR–National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and the ICAR–CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The training focused on advanced cultivation techniques, processing, post-harvest management, and hands-on demonstrations.

During the valedictory session, participants were awarded certificates in “Improved Production and Value Addition Technologies in Tuber Crops” from CTCRI and “Hi-Tech Banana Cultivation” from NRCB. They also completed verified training on low-fat fortified and flavoured chips, which they expressed confidence would encourage start-ups and sustain the local economy upon their return.

Highlighting the importance of continued collaboration, Director of ICAR-CTCRI, Kerala, Dr G. Byju, assured that all necessary technical support required by Nagaland would be extended. He informed that additional food processing trainings would be provided in the future and expressed hope that Wokha would emerge as the hub of tuber crops in Nagaland. He added that CTCRI would continue to guide and assist growers in their endeavours.

Participants described the training as an enriching and practical experience, stating that the knowledge gained would be instrumental in improving farming practices in their communities. They conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner Wokha, the District Horticulture Officer (DHO), the District Agriculture Officer (DAO), ICAR-KVK, and their respective staff for their guidance and support.

A special note of thanks was also extended to the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP), and KVK for their contribution to the programme’s success. The farmers further acknowledged Anuranjan, Skill Development Officer, for his dedicated coordination in ensuring a smooth and successful training trip.

Officials commended the active involvement and enthusiasm of all 19 farmer participants, noting that such exposure programmes not only provide technical knowledge but also broaden perspectives, enabling farmers to adopt modern methods, inspire peers, and strengthen the agricultural sector in Wokha district.

The training concluded with a renewed sense of determination and collective vision, as the participants returned to Wokha on August 29, equipped with knowledge, skills, and inspiration to strengthen agricultural practices and contribute towards a sustainable and prosperous future in the district.
