Wokha, November 27 (MExN): As part of the Systematic Voters Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities for 2021 a signature campaign was conducted on the theme ‘My Vote Not for Sale, I take Pledge for Clean Election,’ at the Wokha Deputy Commissioner Office Complex on November 27.

Around 120 students from nine schools and two colleges participated in the campaign which was organised by the Election Department Wokha.

SDO (C), Wokha, Selemla S Sangtam while briefing the student’s said, this campaign was organised with a view to create awareness among the student’s about Clean Election. She said that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is of the view that first-time voters who are eligible to get enrolled in the Electoral roll should be sensitized before getting enrolled so that they are aware of the entire electioneering process.

Selemla also said that election is a process where the people elect their representatives to form a Government, thereby making elections one of the most important pillars in a democratic country. The success and failure of election in a democratic country depends on responsible citizens who should try to maintain a clean electoral roll, she added.

Discouraging the practise of doing multiple entries, the SDO (C) requested the students and others who have already attained the eligible age and are yet to get themselves enrolled, to get enrolled in only one polling station according to the ECI’s ‘One Man One Vote’ mandate. She also discouraged voters from practising proxy voting.

“Your vote is your voice, rights and power and if you sell your vote you are selling your voice, rights and your power and by doing so you are selling your vote to a meaningless future,” she added while appealing all voters to exercise their franchise in fairness.

Assistant Election Officer, Wokha, Aketo Shohe encouraged the students to be agents of change and lead by example by choosing the right leaders without indulging in any malpractices. Urging the students to show good examples to the society, the officer also informed school administrators and college Principals to constitute Electoral Literacy Clubs at the earliest.
