Women quota: Next hearing on June 18

Dimapur, June 6 (MExN): The Guwahati High Court has set June 18 as the next date for hearing on the Women Reservation issue in Nagaland after the Advocate General representing Nagaland could not attend due to reported bad health. On a lighter side though, the High Court made sure to inquire from the Nagaland’s government’s “lady advocate” why her government is not willing to give ‘her sisters’ the right to women reservation and whether the State government is ready to provide lunch for all the Naga women leaders attending the hearing, which took place June 5 in Guwahati.

The Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) along with a large number of Naga women leaders attended the High Court’s hearing at the Principal Bench, Gauhati High Court in Guwahati.

The JAC narrated in a press release today – “The lady Government Advocate informed the Court that the Advocate general representing the Government of Nagaland was unwell and could not attend. The honorable Chief Justice told the Government Advocate to argue the case. He also asked her why she did not agree to give her Naga sisters, Reservation, and pointed out that the Naga women and sisters were all seated in the court. On the Government advocate stating she was not ready to argue the case, the honorable Chief Justice asked her whether she would be giving lunch to all the Naga women who had come all the way from Nagaland for the case.”

The court hearing was attended by leaders of the Naga Mothers Association, Angamimiapfu Mechu Krotho, Zeliangrong Mepui organization, Rengma Mothers Association, Chakhesang Mothers Association, Pochury Mothers Association, Sumi Totimi Hoho, Kyong Eloe Hoho, Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur, Tenyimi Women Organization, Eastern Naga Women Organization. Senior Supreme Court Advocate Colin Gonsalves was accompanied by Supreme Court Advocate and HRLN lawyer Jayshree, HRLN coordinator and Advocate Debasmita and seven lawyers from HRLN, Guwahati.

The JACWR is hopeful that the Advocate General representing the Nagaland Government will “have a speedy recovery and not avoid” the 18th June 2012 hearing at the Principal Bench, Gauhati High Court.
