A one day legal awareness seminar under the theme ‘Know your rights’ organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Women and National commission for women, New Delhi was held today at the auditorium Zisaji Presidency College Kiphire. The seminar was attended by representatives from ENWO, Hohos, Tribal leaders, civil societies, NGOs and leaders from different discipline.
Delivering the key note address NSCW Chairman Sano Vamuzo said, “Life style of Nagas has change with the change of time. At one point of time Nagas were head hunters but today with the advent of Christianity it has revolutionised our life style too. We should remember the essence of Christianity i.e. forgiveness, love and peace as taught by Christ.” Stating that Nagaland State Commission for Women is a united nation directive, the chairperson said, “Women’s right is a human right. Without women society will not achieve as it is ought to.” She therefore asked the gathering especially the men folk to work shoulder to shoulder by empowering women.
Citing an example of neighbouring North Eastern state where there is 50 % reservation for women, Chairperson NSCW said, “Nagaland is 47 years old still we are struggling with 33% reservation where as women comprises 50 % of the population.” She appealed to the policy makers to seriously ponder “if we feel the need to develop our society.” Touching on Article 371A, Vamuzo said that Article 371A does not mention to deny/discriminate the right of women so we should know clearly what the article is all about but, many of our leaders do not know anything because of which we are facing problem.
Observing the status of the developmental activities and infrastructural status in the district the chairperson agreed that the demand of the ‘Frontier Nagaland’ by ENPO is genuine as the district is neglected in many areas. However, she added, including our leaders in the state for neglecting the district your ENPO leaders also need to be blame equally for the neglecting the district. Sharing her journey experience with the gathering the chairperson said that she is perplex how to reach Tuensang from Kiphire since the road is in pathetic condition as informed.
Speaking at the occasion, Athrila SDO (C) Hq expressed gratitude to the visiting team and said, “with this seminar we will make difference as this kind of seminar are hardly organised in the district.” She also added that women are taken for granted in the society so with this seminar stake holders will learn how to work hand in hand with the women so as to make difference in society. She also called upon the gathering to learn as much as possible and not to leave the seminar half learned.
