Workshop on ‘cultural conflicts in modern times’

Wokha, October 8 (MExN): The Alumni Association Mt Tiyi College, Wokha in collaboration with the Lotha Cultural Resource Centre of Mt Tiyi College organised a workshop on the theme ‘cultural conflicts in modern times’ on October 6. 

Dr Libemo Kithan, Associate Professor, Department of History made a presentation on the Lotha customary laws and practices, an update received here stated. Dr Kithan stressed that customary laws and practices are not rigid because unwritten laws differ from village to village and clan to clan, and thus there is a conflict when they are produced in written form. In this regard, he stressed on a sensitization programme, campaign and public awareness mechanism to educate the public on the fundamental principles of customary law.

A demonstration on the usages and significance of Lotha cultural attire was presented by R Zuchopeni Ezong, former President, Lotha Eloe Hoho. 

Thungjamo Odyuo, Member, Board of Directors, Lotha Academy spoke at length on the importance and significance of Mother Tongue. “The issue is a matter of great concern because our native language is losing importance in today’s society,” Odyuo underscored. 

The programme was moderated by Jenny Patton and Chumchanthug Ezung. N Motsuthung Yanthan invoked God’s presence and Dr Bweyhungle Khing, Principal, Mt Tiyi College welcomed the gathering. Keynote address was delivered by K Edward Ngullie. The gathering was enthralled with folk song by the college students led by Thunchano Ovung, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology. Other highlights included installation of new team of Alumni office Bearers by Dr Renthungo Patton, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. Alumnus M James Tungoe pronounced the vote of thanks. 

The programme concluded with prayer by Dr Medongunuo Ngone, Assistant Professor, Department of English. Thungreni Y Tsopoe and Dr Pichano Kikon, Librarian MTC recorded the proceedings of the programme.
