Dimapur, March 10 (MExN): The Consumer International (CI), headquartered in London has urged its members and supporters to use the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day 2013, under the theme “Consumer Justice Now!” to expose the damage caused by poor or non-existent consumer protection around the world. The theme has been chosen to coincide with the update of the UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection (UNGCP). CI will be working with its members to feed in proposals on how the Guidelines can better address the concerns of today’s consumers. This was stated in a press note by the President of Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation(NVCO) and a National Award Recipient Kezhokhoto Savi.
NVCO is non-profit state level organization dedicated to protect consumers’ interest in all walks of life. As a consumer, it is important to understand your rights. “If you understand rights, then you will feel more confident to stand up for yourself when things go wrong,” Kezhokhoto said.
Briefing on the history of World Consumer Rights Day, he mentioned that President John F. Kennedy was the first world leader to address the issue related to consumer rights to the US congress on March 15, 1962, hence it is celebrated on this day every year. He further said that the consumer organisations started observing the day for promoting global awareness on basic rights of consumers.
He stated that every year on March 15, the global consumer movement unites around a common theme to deliver an exciting array of campaigning activities. It will be an important opportunity for consumer organisations to draw the world’s attention to the crucial role that consumer protection plays in making societies safer and fairer, he added.
