World Pharmacists Day observed in Mon, Peren

Mon, September 25 (MExN): The Mon District Pharmacists' Union (MDPU) and Peren District Pharmacist Association (PDPA) observed World Pharmacists Day on September 25, highlighting the role of pharmacists in patient care, public health and healthcare delivery.

In Mon, the MDPU observed the day at the Chief Medical Office (CMO) under the global theme "Empowering Pharmacists for a Healthier Future".

The programme brought together pharmacists and healthcare professionals from across the district to recognise the contribution of pharmacists to public health and healthcare delivery.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Supongmenla Walling, Chief Medical Officer, Mon, welcomed the pharmacists and acknowledged their dedication and contribution to the district's healthcare system.

Emphasising the significance of the pharmacy profession, Walling described pharmacists as the first-line educators on medicines, highlighting their expertise in drug interactions, effects, side effects and the safe use of medicines.

She said pharmacists played a crucial role not only in routine healthcare but also during public health emergencies by helping ensure access to essential medicines and counter misinformation about drugs.

Walling encouraged pharmacists to uphold professionalism, remain committed to continuous learning and support public health initiatives with dedication and compassion.

She stressed the importance of quality education, continuous professional development, research and effective use of digital tools to keep pace with advancements in healthcare.

She also emphasised the need for supportive policies and stronger collaboration among pharmacists, doctors, nurses, educators, policymakers and patients, urging pharmacists to uphold ethical standards, embrace innovation and place patients at the centre of every decision.

Moie Bonnie Konyak, District Programme Manager (DPM), Mon, highlighted the growing responsibilities of pharmacists in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

She said their role extended beyond dispensing medicines to educating the public, promoting rational use of medicines and addressing misconceptions and self-medication practices influenced by information available on the internet.

Konyak appreciated pharmacists serving in remote health facilities and encouraged them to discharge their responsibilities with patience, dedication and commitment.

She also highlighted their role in supporting primary health centres, health and wellness centres and other healthcare facilities through proper medicine storage, stock management, preparation of indents and safe disposal of medicines.

She encouraged pharmacists to work closely with other healthcare professionals, share their knowledge and actively participate in educating healthcare workers and the public.

Limayanger Ao, District Programme Officer (DPO), Mon, highlighted the role of pharmacists in healthcare delivery and the significance of the year's theme.

He said pharmacists in the district had been participating in regular Continuing Pharmaceutical Education (CPE) programmes since 2021 under the Continuing Medical Education and Training initiative.

The programmes aim to keep pharmacists updated on developments in pharmaceutical sciences, enhance their professional knowledge and strengthen their skills in providing quality healthcare services.

The Mon programme was chaired by Alih N Wangcha, Pharmacist. The invocation was delivered by Sentibenla Ao, Pharmacist, followed by a welcome address by Renthungo Lotha, President, MDPU.

A special prayer for pharmacists was offered by YP David, District Hospital Chaplain, while Hongpe N Lemba, General Secretary, MDPU, delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with a closing prayer.

In Peren, the PDPA observed World Pharmacists Day under the theme "Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures".

Delivering the keynote address, Dr K Limatula Ao, Chief Medical Officer, Peren, highlighted the contribution of pharmacists to healthcare and society and underlined their role in patient safety and counselling services.

She encouraged pharmacists to give their best and discharge their assigned responsibilities with sincerity and dedication.

Ao emphasised the need to empower pharmacists with skills, knowledge and recognition, while promoting digital healthcare and responsible use of medicines. She also encouraged them to remain prepared to face challenges ahead.

Sentila Longchar, District Programme Officer (DPO), in her exhortation address, appreciated the hard work and dedication of pharmacists and highlighted their duties and responsibilities.

She encouraged them to reaffirm their commitment to their responsibilities as healthcare providers.

Sani Stephen, President, Nagaland Pharmacist Association, delivered the welcome address, while Hosea Apon, Head Pharmacist, District Hospital, Peren, administered the Pharmacists' Oath.

Yipungchule, Christian Education Director, Police Church, Dimapur, presented a special musical rendition, while Kwetdahing Samding, retired pharmacist, delivered a special address.

Kirangngngaulule Elu, Treasurer, PDPA, delivered the vote of thanks, while N Patinwining, Pharmacist, Ahthibung PHC, delivered the invocation.

Keyidaule Ndang, Pharmacist, District Hospital, Peren, chaired the programme.

The Peren programme was attended by the CMO, SMO, MOs, DCO, retired pharmacists, nurses and in-service pharmacists from the district.
