WSH concerned over evictions along Nagaland border

Dimapur, August 25 (MExN): The Western Sümi Hoho (WSH), expressed “deep concern” over recent eviction drives conducted by the Assam government in border areas, stating that the actions have adversely affected its people, leading to displacement and disruption of normal life.

In a statement issued today, the Hoho asserted that these activities “go against the spirit of the long-standing Status Quo Agreements,” which were established to maintain peace and prevent any action that could aggravate the still unresolved border issue.

In this “critical situation”, the WSH extended its “sincere appreciation” to Nagaland's Deputy Chief Minister, Y. Patton, for his “consistent leadership” on the issue. The hoho specifically noted his visits to the affected areas on July 24 and August 23 of this year, which it said demonstrated his “deep concern and commitment towards the issue.”

During his second visit, WSH said, “the Deputy Chief Minister gave a firm assurance for the creation of outposts in the affected zones, which has greatly reassured and strengthened the confidence of the people.”

The Hoho also acknowledged the support of Jacob Zhimomi, Minister for Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), alongside the district administration and police, for their “timely presence and commitment to stand by the people during this difficult period.”

Appealing for responsible journalism, the WSH urged media outlets to handle the “sensitive” matter with “responsibility and accuracy, as misinformation or unverified reports can deepen misunderstandings and strain relations.”

The hoho called upon the Governments of Nagaland and Assam to engage in “meaningful dialogue based on historical and authentic records.” It further demanded the “dismantling of any unilaterally erected fencing and the withdrawal of forces from disputed zones.”

Reaffirming its “unwavering” commitment to safeguarding the rights, security, and interests of the affected people, the WSH pledged its “fullest cooperation” towards all efforts that promote peace, stability, and justice along the border.
