Zeme Council on “Zeliang Naga” and “Kacha Naga”

DIMAPUR: The Zeme Council (North East India) general meeting was held at Tenyimi Union office, Dimapur on August 11. A press communiqué issued to The Morung Express by Zeme Council (NEI) stated that the meeting was held to discuss and find ways to improve the welfare and well being of the Zeme community. 

Longbe Meru Jeme, Ex-MLA and a pioneer of Zeme Council expressed his resentment on the ‘anonymity and nomad culture’ of Zeme tribe. He said that while the Zeme people and their lands were referred to as ‘Zeliang’ in Nagaland State, they were in Manipur called as ‘Kacha Naga’.

Speaking on the meeting, I. Jeme, a prominent Zeme leader from N.C. Hill (Assam), suggested on appointing a strong Gaon Bura (GB) Association in Zeme inhabited areas of Manipur and aNagaland, through which the Zeme community could be protected from the harassment and manhandling of the Security Forces.  

He further added that the Zemes should take their own stand and correct the misconception of people’s understanding on this issue.  

President of Zeme Council (NEI), Ngauputlak Heu, highlighted the delegates on the Council’s achievements during his tenure. 
Meanwhile, the house decided to extend his tenure till Feb. 2006.
