Dimapur, June 27 (MExN): The Zeliang People's Organization Dimapur (ZPOD) on Saturday expressed concern on the alarming rise of COVID-19 positive cases in Peren district and sought immediate intervention of the concerned authority to combat the pandemic in the district.
In a press release, the ZPOD appreciated the medical team and all the front line workers for their dedicated efforts and sacrifices, but however expressed dismay at the lack of preparedness by concerned authority in accommodating the returnees. “It may be noted that Peren District has received one of the highest numbers of returnees. However, there is acute shortage of accommodations and limited access to toilets, leading to cramping of returnees in limited rooms,” it said. In this regard, the ZPOD suggested that the concerned authority utilize the many government buildings lying vacant to house the returnees.
The ZPOD also put across its findings that no separate rooms have been provided to those who have undergone swab tests and are awaiting results. It expressed apprehension that the swab test results might become ‘unreliable’ as tested persons continue to be exposed to any person who might be COVID-19 positive. As such, it requested that the returnees be immediately separated in order to control the spread of the virus.
The ZPOD also opined that full medical test report should be given mandatorily to maintain credibility of the test results for future references and to avoid stigmatization of the returnees.
Further, it appealed to the government to immediately assign more medical staff to assist those currently deployed, while also demanding the government to provide up-to date medical equipments on priority. The ZPOD also appealed the government to increase the number of beds and increase the testing capacity under Peren district.
While appreciating the civil society under Peren district for their collective effort in combating the pandemic situation, the ZPOD further appealed the concerned authority to ‘identify and punish returnees creating problem and defying the guidelines’ set by the District Task Force as per the law. The ZPOD also appealed to all the returnees to have patience regardless of any shortcomings and to continue maintaining discipline during their period of quarantine.
It meanwhile expressed gratitude to all the donors as well as the Dimapur based organizations and district task force for extending their help and support in this arduous time.
