The District Administration of Zunheboto organised a mass awareness campaign under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, under the theme “Prevention is a Better Option” at the Multi-Purpose Hall on August 23.

L. Chinglem Konyak, NCS, EAC (Hq) Zunheboto, highlighted the increasing indulgence of youth especially students in alcohol and drug abuse. He emphasised the importance of prevention, stating, “Prevention is better than cure. We should act before it is too late. Once addicted, it becomes very difficult to return to a normal life. Addiction not only affects personal health but also deteriorates one’s social life and respect in society.”

Konyak further stressed the role of parenting, saying, “this generation is being spoiled due to soft parenting. We need to revive the era of strict parenting. If you truly love your children, you must teach them good habits, discipline, and manners through firm guidance.”

Anito Kiba, UBI, addressed the audience by noting that drug and substance abuse is often rooted in parental neglect and peer pressure.

“It’s not easy to fight this battle against drugs alone. We are doing our best to build a better society. This is not just an individual problem but a community problem. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for everything,” he stated.

Boto Sema, Drug Inspector of Zunheboto, pointed out that the future lies in a drug-free generation. He mentioned that “Our students and youth are at a vulnerable stage. Proper care and timely intervention are crucial. We are also witnessing a rise in the number of users undergoing Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) in Zunheboto. Let us take this is an opportunity to stay drug-free and spread awareness,” he urged.

The event was chaired by Liviya Aye, Executive Member of the District No Tobacco Club Zunheboto (DNTCZ). The program began with invocation by Nupato Zhimo, Assistant Youth Pastor of ZTSBC. A short drama was performed by the reigning Miss Sumi 2024, promoting the message of abstaining from alcohol and drug abuse while spreading love and positivity.

Akheto V. Asumi, a student from Immanuel Higher Secondary School, presented a special song. Winners of the essay writing and painting competitions held in connection with the campaign were also felicitated during the event.

The programme concluded with a pledge and benediction delivered by Ghunato Assumi, Associate Pastor of SBCZ.
