Banking operations in Zunheboto town presented a mixed picture on Sunday, with some branches remaining open and others closed as banks geared up for a proposed three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30.
Notably, no customers turned up at bank branches in the town despite special Sunday banking arrangements made to give customers an additional opportunity to complete essential transactions ahead of the strike.
Bank employees are preparing to participate in the nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to press for their demands, including the introduction of a five-day banking week.
The strike follows the fourth Saturday holiday on September 26 and Sunday, September 27.
The Ministry of Finance had instructed Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to function as usual on Sunday to avoid a prolonged disruption to banking services. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that day.
In Zunheboto, the Nagaland State Cooperative Bank and HDFC Bank were closed, while the SBI Main Branch was only partially open. The SBI Bazar Branch was functioning but reportedly suffered a link/network failure that affected transactions. Axis Bank was also seen operating.
The proposed strike is expected to mainly impact in-person services at branches, though digital banking, UPI and ATM services are generally expected to remain available barring technical glitches.
