The Divisional Forest Office (DFO), Zunheboto Division, has announced an inclusive district-wide plantation campaign to mark World Environment Day 2026 on June 5.
According to a circular issued by the Divisional Forest Officer, the initiative is being organised in alignment with the national campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” and aims to encourage active participation from government institutions, village councils, community organizations, and citizens across Zunheboto District.
As part of the programme, the Forest Department will provide saplings for plantation to all seven Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) representing constituencies under Zunheboto District, the Deputy Commissioner, and the Superintendent of Police. Each MLA, as well as the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, will receive 10 saplings of selected tree species and 50 cherry saplings for plantation.
In addition, the Superintendent of Police will be provided with 55 extra saplings of selected species for plantation in all eight police stations and three police outposts across the district.
The saplings will be available for collection from the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Zunheboto, beginning June 3.
The Forest Department has also appealed to all Village Councils under Zunheboto District to take the lead in organizing plantation activities in their respective villages with the support of churches, elders, youth groups, student organizations, Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs), institutions, and local communities. Villages have been encouraged to plant indigenous tree species during the observance of World Environment Day.
To document the initiative, the department has requested participants to submit high-quality photographs of plantation activities along with details of the villages and organizations involved. The department stated that all saplings planted during the programme will be monitored for one year to assess their survival rate and overall success, with records to be maintained until World Environment Day 2027.
Divisional Forest Officer Obed Bohovi Swu has emphasised the importance of collective action in making Zunheboto greener and called upon all sections of society to actively participate in the environmental campaign. “Help make Zunheboto greener,” Swu added.
