Zunheboto: Landslide threatens infrastructure in Alahuto Colony

Continuous rainfall has triggered a major landslide at Alahuto Colony in Zunheboto, putting the Alahuto Colony Prayer Fellowship Sunday School building, the connecting road and an important electricity pole at serious risk.

A portion of the land near the Sunday School building has already been washed away, with the ground reportedly continuing to sink day by day. The situation has raised concern among residents as the narrow road is the main transportation route connecting the colony, while the electricity pole located near the landslide-prone area is also reportedly on the verge of collapse.

Speaking to the media on Monday morning, Alahuto Colony GB Shitokhu said the area had already been highlighted to the concerned authorities on July 20, but no positive response or preventive measures had been initiated.

He said the situation had now worsened following the recent rainfall and warned that a further slide could completely damage the road, creating serious difficulties for residents.

“We have a very narrow road, and if this landslide takes away the road, it will be very difficult for the colony members,” he said, urging the higher authorities to take the matter up on top priority.

Shitokhu said the landslide requires immediate protection measures, particularly the construction of a retaining wall, but added that the colony does not have the resources to undertake such work on its own.

He also expressed concern over the electricity pole situated in the landslide-prone area, saying it supplies power to more than 200 households located on the other side of the slope. He said the colony would coordinate with the Power Department to assess the situation and take necessary measures to prevent the pole from collapsing.

Recalling the earlier warning, Shitokhu said the colony had raised the issue on July 20, but before any preventive work could be implemented, a major landslide occurred in the area. He urged the authorities to intervene without further delay to prevent possible loss of property and disruption of essential services.

Meanwhile, SBCZ, Associate Pastor Sector Alahuto Colony Vihoto H Awomi said natural calamities have affected several parts of Zunheboto district in recent times along with many other district in Nagaland, damaging houses and posing serious challenges to residents in our town.

He said Alahuto Colony is also one of the larger colonies in Zunheboto town, with more than 3,000 households, and stressed the need for timely intervention to prevent the situation from worsening.

The colony leaders also acknowledged the support and cooperation of church members, colony leaders and political leaders while appealing to the concerned departments and higher authorities to take immediate preventive measures at the landslide site.
