Kohima, October 23 (MExN): A statewide cyber safety awareness campaign, the Nagaland Cyber Tour 2026, concluded on Friday after covering all 17 districts and reaching over 6,500 people.
Organised by MMB Cyber School with Nagaland Police, the tour was held in two phases from July 31 to October 23. It covered 50 educational institutions, comprising 41 schools and nine colleges and universities, besides five community-level engagements.
The MMB Cyber School in a press release stated that the sessions focused on cybercrime, online financial fraud, phishing, identity theft, cyberbullying, misinformation, fake job and scholarship offers, digital privacy and responsible internet use. Participants were taught to recognise suspicious online activity, safeguard personal information and take preventive measures against emerging cyber threats.
The first phase began on July 31 at Baptist Higher Secondary School, Tseminyu, and ended on August 14. It covered 12 institutions in Tseminyu, Tuensang, Noklak, Shamator, Kiphire, Meluri and Satakha.
The second phase began on September 21 at Union Christian School, Pfutsero, and ended on October 23 at Loyola School, Kohima. It covered 38 institutions across Pfutsero, Phek, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, Mon, Niuland, Dimapur, Peren and Kohima.
Beyond institutions, the tour held five community engagements. These included the Thang Students' Union Library cum Tuition Centre and SP Conference Hall in Noklak, Yimkhiung Tribal Complex in Shamator, a Children Home in Satakha, and a stakeholder session for police personnel and civil society representatives in Mon.
These sessions dealt with fraudulent financial schemes, impersonation, suspicious communications, digital arrest scams, deceptive online offers and the protection of personal and banking information. They also stressed the role of parents, community leaders and local organisations in spreading awareness and ensuring cybercrime is reported promptly.
The outreach received extensive coordination from Nagaland Police, under the guidance of Director General of Police Rupin Sharma and Additional Director General of Police Sandeep M Tamgadge. Superintendents of Police, district police personnel, participating institutions, local authorities and community representatives also supported the exercise.
Guided by the message “THINK. VERIFY. PROTECT.”, the sessions urged participants to be cautious before responding to unfamiliar online communications, verify information and digital transactions, protect confidential data and use proper reporting channels.
Building on the initiative, future collaborative efforts will aim to extend outreach to more sections of society through targeted programmes on emerging cyber threats and digital literacy.
