128 bags of PMKAY relief rice ‘sold off’

ESSU demands inquiry

DIMAPUR, MAY 6 (MExN): The Eastern Sumi Students' Union (ESSU) has expressed shock at an incident wherein two individuals allegedly “sold off” 128 bags of rice grains meant for public distribution.

A press release from the ESSU President, Hokato V Yeptho and General Secretary, Vinato Z Awomi said that the rice was meant for public distribution allocated for Aghunato sub-division under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMKAY).

The grains were reportedly sent back to Dimapur due to spoilage by rain, it added. However in the process of transporting the grains back, the two individuals allegedly sold the grains at Satakha. The Zunheboto DC, on contacted, informed that they were detained at Satakha. The Superintendent of Police, Zunheboto meanwhile informed that they were later released on bail on May 1.

The ESSU, while condemning the incident, questioned as to how the case was handled.

It questioned “whether the food grains were intentionally sent to be sold off under the pretext of spoilage by rain and whether concerned official/s and other influential individual/s are involved in this case since the case seemed to have been buried as indicated by the facts that the culprits were released from detention immediately and another 128 bags of rice grains was reported to be sent back to Aghunato by the Food & civil Supplies Department from Dimapur.”

The ESSU appealed to the Advisor, Food & Civil Supplies, LM&CP and taxes, Pukhayi Assumi , who is also a current representative of 34 AC, Aghunato to order a proper investigation without delay.
