The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police Station raided an illegal international call centre and arrested 116 employees in Aurangabad, Maharashtra on October 29.
Speaking to The Morung Express, the Sub Inspector and Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, Geeta Bagwade, confirmed that out of the 116 arrested employees, 25 were from Nagaland ranging from 19 to 29 years of age.
At the same time, Bagwade confirmed that the parents and relatives of the arrested Naga youths have been informed and added that the bail has been scheduled for November 10 by the court.
However, contrary to the police, speaking to The Morung Express, the president of Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP), Namgui KC Gangmei, said that he was doubtful about the police’s claim of having informed the parents of the arrests, adding that “only 8 parents are in the group chat created for the arrested youths.”
Gangmei informed that he had volunteered himself to go to the police station to see ascertain the actual situation. However, he added, due to the limited funding of the union, he had asked the parents to arrange the bare minimum amount for travel and lawyer fares.
Speaking to The Morung Express, the president of Naga Students’ Union Bangalore (NSUB), Ramachan Shimray, said that the two unions (NSUB and NSUP) only came to know of the situation after two parents called them enquiring about two missing children as they were unable to reach to them.
After thorough inquiry, Shimray confirmed that the two missing person were in fact among the 25 arrested Naga youths. Shimray maintained that the root cause of all this was the recruiter stating ‘there must be someone local (Naga) recruiting the young unemployed youth.’
He informed that out of 116 arrested suspects, 25 were from Nagaland, 15 from Meghalaya, 6 from Manipur and 5 from Assam.
Furthermore, he asked the friends and relatives to reach out to any youths working in call centres (in and around Maharashtra) in order to extract information as he feared that many parents of the arrested youths might still be unaware of the situation.
