Out of 11, 488 teachers in Nagaland, 5517 are trained and 5490 teachers are untrained, which means 52% teachers are trained and 48% are untrained in government schools across the state.
This was stated in the ‘Survey on School Based Statistics in Nagaland’ conducted by the State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) Nagaland.
The report stated that in Dimapur district there are 1888 teachers, out of which 859 are trained and 980 are untrained teachers.
The number of untrained teachers in each district are as follows: Kiphire (303), Kohima (452), Longleng (233), Mokokchung (959), Mon (292), Peren (174), Phek (551), Tuensang (817), Wokha (266), and Zunheboto (463).
“We find that in the districts like Kohima, Longleng, Mokokhung, Peren and Wokha, at least more than 50% of teachers are trained. But in the districts like Dimapur, Kiphire, Mon, Phek, Tuensang and Zunheboto, more than 50% of teachers are not trained,” the report stated.
The study team observed that “the issue of in-service teachers training needs to be tackled on a war footing.” Referring to trained teachers scenario in all the districts of Nagaland—Pre-Service Teacher Education (PSTE) and In-Service Teacher Education (ISTE), the report stated that the number of PSTE trained teachers is more in all the districts across the state except Mon, where the number of ISTE trained teachers are little more than PSTE trained teachers.
In the districts like Kohima, Longleng and Mokokchung there are more PSTE trained teachers.
“So we see the total number of PSTE trained teachers are 941 in the state and the total number of ISTE trained teachers are 330 in the state of Nagaland till 2017,” the report stated.
Apart from PSTE, the other professional teacher training courses are undertaken by the teachers are CPTE, D. El, Ed, ELTI and ECCE.
“We found the number of CPTE trained teachers in Nagaland is 625, D. El. Ed. is 1010, ELTI is 87 and ECCE is 288. But when we see district-wise data we find in the majority of the districts, the trained teachers have undergone D. El, Ed. except in the districts like Kohima, Peren and Phek. There is an unusual finding in Peren district where there are no trained teachers who have done D. El, Ed. If we compare among the districts, we found that from Kohima district, there are 72 ECCE trained teachers, which is the highest in number,” the report stated.
Adding that it found most of the trained teachers have undergone D. El. Ed., followed by CPTE, the next is ECCE trained and the least number is ELTI trained teachers. It concluded that there are still a lot of teachers in Nagaland who are not trained professionally.
