The 8th Inter-Departmental Sports Meet for both male and female categories commenced on November 28 following an opening ceremony, held on November 28 at the Town Hall, Wokha.

Wokha Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar, IAS, graced the programme as the special guest. In his address, Kumar expressed delight at the growing scale and enthusiasm surrounding the Inter-Departmental Sports Meets.

He extended warm appreciation to the organising committee led by the District Sports Officer and all officials who, despite their demanding schedules, managed to plan, design and bring everyone together for the event. He emphasised that the spirit of the meet goes beyond winning or losing. “Like we always say, this event is about participation. Winning certainly brings joy to an individual and the department, but the larger purpose is to take part,” Kumar said.

Reflecting on the diverse categories of participants, the DC noted the presence of regular sportspersons who maintain fitness as a routine, those who begin practicing only after the departmental games are announced, and those who volunteer without any practice and directly enter the field. “Sports offer a wonderful opportunity for self-reflection for all categories of players,” he remarked.

He underscored the significance of sports and physical activity in managing the pressures and stress associated with government service. “Physical fitness is essential, but sports also contribute immensely to mental well-being. Many of us work under stress, and it is important to give due importance to physical activities,” he said.

The DC expressed hope that the inter-departmental event would rekindle an interest in sports and encourage staff to be more physically active.

Commending the significantly increased participation this year, he said the success of the meet is particularly meaningful because it is organised by the department for the department, without external involvement. He encouraged all departments to take pride in the tournament and participate in the right spirit.

The event was chaired by Rechalungle, EAC Wokha, while the welcome address was delivered by Renbomo Ezung, ADC Wokha, followed by a special presentation from the Youth Resource & Sports Department. Sedevizo Pienyü (PIS) administered the oath-taking ceremony before the special guest officially declared the sports meet open.

Following the formalities, competitions commenced across various disciplines, including tug of war, penalty shoot-out, chess, carom, table tennis, and badminton. Participants from multiple departments engaged enthusiastically, showcasing their talent and teamwork.
