Ten years from now, Sarah Pongen, Director (Administration & Business Development), Hornbill Finance Limited sees Naga youths as successful corporate professionals. With accounting continuing to be a popular career choice for the people at colleges and universities in the country, Sarah feels that Naga youths will be a tough competition in India in accounting profession.

The Institute of Indian Institute of Job Oriented Training (IIJT), Sarah said will be the stepping ground for educated unemployed Naga youths to create and pursue different career options.

The future of accounting promises even more exciting changes, providing a variety of new opportunities and experiences. Despite the recent turbulence in the world’s financial market, despite all the talk about corporate downsizing, computer accountancy professionals continue to find a healthy employment market.

Sarah, while complimenting, upcoming young Naga entrepreneurs,  revealed that IIJT will tie up with local corporate entities in the coming years. Sarah says, “Nagas are talented, they are intelligent.” She also added, “They are lazy and have low self-esteem and they don’t know what to do with the brain.”

The existing social, political and economic problems, particularly insurgency in the state of Nagaland, have also disheartened Naga students from moving ahead said Sarah.

Taking into consideration the percentage of unemployment in India where the index of the educated unemployed is higher than illiterate unemployment, a franchise of the IIJT will be launched tomorrow by the Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio at IMC, Dimapur to prepare Naga youths to compete in the global accountancy market. Nagas look for government jobs but the government cannot accommodate all the unemployed and it is sad to see people depending on their parents for their livelihood said Sarah.

South Asian countries have a short supply of computer accountancy professionals and in this context, the Nagas have an added advantage due to their ‘friendly familiar appearance,’ fluency in English, smartness etc said Sarah. She also reminded that the profession of accountancy has changed a great deal and accountants are required to possess good interpersonal skills making it become  more consultative-oriented. To develop the personality of students, IIJT has also tied up with ‘Hero-Mind Mine,’ a personality development agency from America.

The class for the first IIJT batch in computer accountancy will start on November 1 with 80 % of the course to be conducted in practical. The institute will also provide real documents used in companies as study materials. It may be mentioned that the Indian Institute of Job Oriented Training is being financed and sponsored by the Hornbill Finance limited.
