Kohima, June 8 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students union (ANCSU) on June 8 submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor (VC), Nagaland University on various issues concerning the Nagaland University (NU) and the college fraternity.
In its letter, ANCSU stated that through its representation submitted earlier on October 1, 2020, the Union had sought the VC’s consideration and necessary action on the mentioned issues. However, having seen no positive development towards the issues being raised, the Union stated that it is ‘constrained’ to submit the memorandum.
More colleges offering PG courses
Among the issues raised by the ANCSU, it highlighted the “limited masters’ degree seats in the state of Nagaland” and apprised the VC of the urgent need of more college offering post graduate (PG) courses.
It appealed the Nagaland University to promptly assess eligible colleges who have applied to offer post graduate courses and approve the same for the forthcoming academic session.
“This shall enable the few aspiring students to study master courses from the state itself, and shall also effectively facilitate the underlying problems arising from the global pandemic,” it reasoned.
Proposal for NU ‘facilitation centre’
The ANCSU stated that it has ascertained that many colleges and students are facing massive inconveniences to travel to Lumami for receiving and dispatching files and necessary documents due to long distance. In this regard, the ANCSU made a strong appeal for ‘facilitation centres’ to be opened at NU, Meriema Kohima campus and NU, SETM Dimapur campus respectively to facilitate submission and receiving of files and necessary documents.
The Union stated that it would be appreciated if the university can also come up with online payment provisions to the university by the colleges or the transaction be made through the facilitation centres.
Appointments and salary
ANCSU appealed the VC to be “vigilant in appointment of Assistant/Associate Professors by both private and government colleges” and ensure that they strictly adhere to the University Grants Commission guidelines with requisite qualifications.
The university has also been requested to be vigilant in regard to payment of salary by institutions to the faculties as per the UGC guidelines.
Issuing of meritorious certificate and medal
The Union noted that since 2018, it has been felicitating the degree toppers and observed it to be of “great encouragement to the students.”
With that as reference, the Union appealed the university to issue Meritorious Certificate and Medal to the subject toppers annually along with the issuance of marksheet/convocation.
Pass certificate and migration certificate
While acknowledging the commitment made by the Nagaland University in declaring the degree results on time, the ANCSU appealed the NU for timely release of necessary documents to set conveniences for admissions in other institutes outside the State.
“Over the years, the students have faced untold hardship in acquiring their original pass certificate and migration certificate,” it stated while adding that the Union is of the view that the university can expedite the required procedures or adopt alternative mode of fulfilling such procedures. As proposed, the facilitation centres could also be used as a medium of communication, it suggested.
The Union expressed hope that its ‘genuine representation’ would be considered and taken up on priority. “We hope that this memorandum would invite your esteemed authority to pay attention to the grievances of the students’ community and that timely action is taken up to avoid any confrontation,” it added.
