AR issue rebuttal

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 17 (MExN): The Assam Rifles (AR) today rebutted the press allegations made against the AR action at Mon on 15 September which was published in the local newspapers. According to a press note from the AR, it was claimed that the operations were launched on receipt of specific intelligence about the presence of 04/05 ULFA armed cadres hiding in a specific house. It was not known that owner of the house, was Self Styled Lt Col Apang Konyak, or that only ladies were present in the house, the AR stated.

The search of  house resulted in recovery of one 9mm Pistol with Magazine, two Radio Set ICOM, 300 rounds ammunition of various types, twenty seven electronic detonators, two Combat helmet, three Combat shoes, eighteen pairs Combat uniform, four ammunition pouches and  four  Web belts, the press note disclosed.
Further large quantity of warlike stores were recovered from inside a well camouflaged tunnel behind the bathroom mirror which according to the AR clearly indicated that the house of Self Styled Lt Col Apang Konyak was used as a storehouse/armoury for hiding warlike stores for use by his armed faction or for supply to ULFA and other UGs which is “against the Cease Fire Ground Rules”.
The AR further stated that the press allegation against the army was a “propaganda campaign launched by vested interests against the successful ops carried by the AR in ensuring implementation of the Cease Fire Ground Rules”. The AR stated that stood by its commitment as ‘Friends of the Hill People’ to “ensure a weapons and extortion free society and a peaceful environment in Nagaland”.
