Wokha, December 8 (MExN): The District Health Society Wokha under the direction of the District Administration organized an awareness program on pre-conception & pre-natal diagnostic techniques ACT 1994 (PCPNDT) under “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” “Save the Girl Child” activities on December 8 at WDVBD conference hall Wokha town. Resource person of the program Dr Tumchobeni MS District Hospital highlighted on the importance of the PCPNDT ACT 1994, for the prohibition of sex selection, before or after conception, for detecting genetic abnormalities or metabolic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities or certain congenital malformations or sex-linked disorders and for the prevention of their misuse for sex determination leading to female feticide. She also mentioned the offences and penalties pertaining to this Act and as a responsible citizen we should encouraged gender equality and provide education for all irrespective of the sexes.
Dr Jonsuthung Kithan Private practitioner also shared his experiences on the PC&PNDT Act and made a strong statement that the Doctors should discourage the couples requesting to know the sex of the child during ante-natal check-ups. He further on said that Doctors are equally responsible for the proper implementation of this Act. The program was chaired by Dr Robin Lotha CMO Wokha; keynote address was given by Dr Zuben Kikon Deputy CMO. The program was attended by PD (DRDA), Education Department, Social Welfare Department, Police Department, Legal Cell Wokha, Lotha Eloe Hoho, Pastors, Hindu Samaj, Muslim Union, and NHM staffs Wokha, a press release from H&FW informed.
