KOHIMA, AUGUST 8 (MExN): Jo Foundation Inclusive School, in collaboration with the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and ChangeInkk Foundation, on August 7 conducted an awareness session on “Understanding Specific Learning Disabilities” (SLDs) at its premises here.
Around 54 participants, including parents, schoolteachers, administrators, and resource persons from the collaborating organisations, attended the programme.
The session aimed at building foundational awareness among parents and teachers on the nature, identification, and support systems related to SLDs. Resource persons from ChangeInkk Foundation made a detailed presentation covering the definition, characteristics, and various forms of SLDs such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia, along with their differing manifestations among children.
Discussions also highlighted the impact of undiagnosed SLDs on a child’s academic performance, self-esteem, and emotional well-being, stressing the importance of timely intervention. Participants were guided on identifying early signs, seeking screening and diagnosis, and the role of certification under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in availing entitlements.
Practical strategies for parents to support learning at home, reduce stress, and build confidence in children with SLDs were shared. The session also emphasised the strengths of individuals with SLDs, including creativity and problem-solving skills, and shared success stories to encourage a strength-based approach.
Information on available accommodations in the state—such as exam provisions, classroom support, and inclusive education policies—was provided to enable better advocacy for children.
Organisers said the session helped dispel myths around poor academic performance and improved participants’ confidence in identifying SLDs, understanding support systems, and creating inclusive home and classroom environments.
