Calls for end to parallel taxation in Nagaland
Kohima, October 16 (MExN): The Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) has reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and honourable resolution of the long-standing Naga National issue, while asserting that legitimate aspirations cannot justify the financial exploitation and harassment of the public.
Reaffirming the 1993 Angami Public Organisation (APO) resolution advocating “One Government, One Tax,” the AYO President Petevito Nakhro and General Secretary Vipu Zashumo in a statement said people have borne the burden of parallel taxation for decades and that extortion has now become an aggressive commercial racket bleeding the economy dry.
It called upon citizens to refuse illegal financial demands, stating that no individual, business person, entrepreneur or organisation is obligated to entertain them.
The AYO urged Naga National workers to refrain from harassment, taxation and extortion of business establishments and individuals, and appealed to all Naga Political Groups to respect the sentiments of the Angami community and avoid any action that could lead to conflict.
In a set of directives, the AYO said a strict “One Government, One Tax” principle would be enforced and that no individual, business house or contractor shall entertain or pay any tax, yearly fee or festive demand to any underground faction.
It said the organisation stands in absolute solidarity with the business community and the public, and warned that any threat, intimidation or attempt to shut shops over non-payment would be met with immediate, coordinated public agitation.
The AYO also urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to decisively step up and proactively enforce the rule of law and guarantee citizens’ safety. It demanded that each District Executive Force establish a dedicated and confidential helpline or grievance cell, and said the portal Suraksha.PoliceNagaland.com and the helpline of the Crime Branch of PHQ should be utilised and made convenient for the public.
The AYO also requested the public to remain vigilant, unified, and steadfast in adhering to these directives.
