Bird Flu hovers on Nagaland’s borders

Dimapur May 3 (MExN): A case of bird Flu has been confirmed at Mandalay Central Town in Myanmar (Burma) which shares porous borders with the State of Nagaland, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Animal Husbandry/Fisheries, Government of India. The confirmation was made in a letter to the Chief Secretary of Nagaland dated March 18.

In the wake of the confirmation, the department has asked that the movement of illegal poultry, poultry products and all livestock across the borders of the adjoining Myanmar areas be checked as it shares borders with Nagaland.

To that extent, it appealed that the military/Para-military and the state police force be alerted to maintain surveillance and supervision all along the border. It was informed in an official circular issued by Dr N Meyase, Director, department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry that the strain of Bird Flu was that of the High Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

In the wake of the report the Special Secretary to the Government of Nagaland in a letter dated March 24 has written to the Secretary, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, the Director General of Police, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles(South), the Deputy Commissioners of Mon, Tuensang, Phek districts advising that the movement of illegal poultry, poultry products and all livestock products across the Myanmar border into Nagaland be checked so as to ensure that no such illegal movement takes place.
