Chandel Nagas urge NSF to step into dismal edn system

CHANDEL | JUNE 25 : The education system in Chandel district is at its lowest ebb if one has to go by what the public leaders here who spoke during the NSF goodwill tour meeting at Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) Hall, Chandel on Saturday.
An Advocate, Rebirthson described the education system as “very pathetic” and “not working” stating that the system is “very wrong.” He said the open mass copying and impersonation of students during exams were rampant which was destroying the education system from its roots.  According to the advocate, the syllabi are also all politicized.
He maintained that several schools exist in Chandel only in papers but not in reality. Further, he also said that crores of money has been poured into Chandel only in papers. Stating that there is mushrooming of private schools without having all necessary infrastructures, he urged the NSF to take effective steps to check such practice.  
Another speaker, L. Poring revealed that many did not reciprocate to the idea of school affiliation with NBSE since they had to face several difficulties to reach Kohima for appearing exams. He, however, added that to survive as a nation, one has to come across numerous difficulties adding “we have not given up hope to get affiliated with NBSE.” He underlined the importance of understanding the policies of those who have control over the system as they might try subjugating the tribals.
A school teacher suggested the NSF to set up a committee to study the functioning of schools under Chandel district and how teachers were appointed . He said that thousands of students from outside the district infiltrates into Chandel to eailsy get through matric exam where mass copying is widely practised.
A teacher of Government Higher Secondary School said though the School been upgraded fulfilling the dreams of the people yet it has not served the purpose.  He pointed out that all teachers in the School are on contractual basis and duties not performed as expected. He lamented that the government has not able to appoint a full-fledged principal as the post has not been sanctioned. The teacher also pointed out that the school is managed by three different bodies. Another teacher presented a compilation of photos showing mass copying by students in exam. The photos were taken during the High School Leaving Certificate Examination 2011 at Chandel Private Centre conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.
NSF president, Kelhouneizo Yhome expressed deep pain to learn about the dismal education system in Chandel. He urged the various students’ union in Chandel to see that the basic needs and facilities are given to the Naga brothers and sisters in schools. He also urged the ANSAM to ensure that free and fair exams are conducted.
On the socio-economic issue, Poring said that Chandel though it is the nearest point to several international routes, the people have not able to take advantage of the geographical location since they lack capital to take up any initiatives. He said that the Manipur government is taking up many schemes in the name of Chandel district but the benefits are never really reaching the people. He asserted that Chandel district has lots of prospects in trade and commerce and called upon the Nagas everywhere to help and promote each other.
Some of the speakers pointed said that Chandel is the most affected whenever there is any blockade called by organisations in Nagaland. On the Naga issue, Poring said that the people have become a little redundant due to prolonged talks.
CNPO president, Victor said that the Nagas in Chandel would be petitioning Nagaland Chief Minister seeking his help in opening up a road from Chandel to Myanmar. He said that the CNPO had earlier written to the Manipur CM on the same matter but without response. According to Victor, there will be immense benefits for the Nagas if the road to Myanmar which is only 26 miles is opened. On the Naga political issue, he said the CNPO has resolved to support the Naga peace process until it is resolved.
Chandel in inhabited by seven Naga tribes namely: Lamkang, Anal, Maring, Moyon, Monsang, Chothe and Tarao.  Out of this, students’ union of the first 5 tribes are affilIated with the NSF and the two others are in the proces of getting affiliated.
The consultative meeting was attended by Naga Students’ Union Chandel,  Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO), Anal Students’ Union, Teachers’ Association Chandel,  ANSAM, principals  of schools and higher secondary schools, advocates and intellectuals.
The NSF team will be visiting Tamenglong and hold meeting there on Sunday.
