Child Rights Week: DCPU conducts programme on child safety laws

CHÜMOUKEDIMA, NOVEMBER 18 (MExN): The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), in collaboration with Child Helpline 1098, conducted a one-day awareness programme as part of Child Rights Week at Seitheke Basa Council Hall, Chümoukedima, on November 17. The programme was chaired by Child Helpline Project Coordinator Mhaseto Rhakho.

Addressing the gathering, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Member Awala Jamir spoke on The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Child Marriage Act. She highlighted the increasing concern of child marriage and underscored the responsibility of parents and the community in preventing such practices. She also explained the role of Child Helpline 1098 in responding to cases related to child marriage.

Jamir further sensitised participants on the issue of child labour, stressing that education remains the most effective tool to eliminate child labour from society.

Chairperson of CWC Chümoukedima, Esther K. Aye, spoke on Child Rights and the Right to Education, stating that every child between 6 and 14 years has the right to free and compulsory education. She highlighted key provisions of the POCSO Act and emphasised the need to protect children from abuse while promoting awareness about Child Helpline 1098. Around 200 participants attended the programme.
