At a time when Naga Mircha sauce are produced and imported from very ambitious international and national companies across the globe, Chuka, a local brand owned by Roots Cooperative Society, and distributed by Zatara Marketing in Dimapur endeavors to give the deserved value addition to Nagaland’s own Agro products.

“Our main objective is to bring one product synonymous to Nagaland, and hence this Naga Mircha sauce,” Sentinaro Alley, chairperson of Roots Cooperative Society said. The Nagaland Department of Horticulture has already registered the Geographical Indication (GI) of “Naga Mircha” with origin in Nagaland.

The chillis are exported from far flung villages in Peren district, the largest grower of Naga Mircha in Nagaland. The Peren chillies are also dubbed as the hottest and more fragrant from among all the Naga Mircha grown in the state and outside.

Alley explains that the exceptional thing of this Naga Mircha sauce of Chuka brand is that all the pre-processing, blending and packaging is done by women and made only in small batches to maintain freshness.

The Roots Cooperative Society has roped in two SHGs namely Kakung and Wissan from Tening town and Intuma village for the pre-processing as well as for their livelihood activity by installing two pre-processing plants. The pre-finished produce are transported to Indisen, Dimapur where another group of women work on the final processing and packaging.

“Our objective is not only about sell and earn; we continually aspire to give equal importance to providing livelihood to Naga farmers and for empowering women, Alley pointed out as one particular reason why the Society had set the two pre-processing plants in Peren- as means of providing additional economic inputs to the women farmers. The “Seriously Hot Sauce, Naga Mircha” has rolled out in the markets since April, 2017. One tiny bottle of 60ml which comes with a price tag of Rs 100 has more than a million Scoville in the heat department. Strictly to be taken as a food additive, it isn’t for the faint hearted.
