CIH trains youths, farmers on various horti technologies

Dimapur, January 22 (MExN): The Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema organized three on-campus training programmes on organic farming, nursery management and refreshers course on post harvest management of horticulture crops over the past week.

According to the a press release from the CIH Medziphema which functions under the Department of Agriculture, Co-operation and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, the course was conducted for ex-trainees, youths and entrepreneurs from January 12 to 15.

The trainees were given hands on practical demonstration on extraction of pineapple and banana fibre, preparation of wild apple candy, value addition of carambola and preparation of banana chips, post harvest management of flowers and marketing with respect to horticultural crops in the northeast region. Altogether, 12 participants attended the course.

Another two-day training on organic farming was conducted on January 14 to 15, where participants were provided training on the concept and principles of organic farming, packaging and practices of important fruits and vegetables, importance and uses of bio inputs and organic inputs and organic value chain in horticulture, the release stated.

Field visit to the institutes’ demonstration farm and demonstration and use of vermicompost was also conducted. The participants included 20 farmers, educated unemployed youths and FPCs from Dimapur and Bungsang village attended the training programme.

Meanwhile, training on nursery management of horticulture was conducted on January 19 and 20 for famers, educated unemployed youths and participants from Organicflora FPC Dimapur.

The training topic comprised of introduction and classification of nursery, layout and physical resources of nursery, management of vegetable nursery, management of nurseries under protected cultivation, nursery accreditation and guidelines for recognition of horticultural nurseries.

The institute also conducted field visit to the institute’s nursery unit and provided practical demonstrations on various propagation techniques in horticulture crops. Altogether 27 participants attended the training programme on nursery management, it said.

Technical officers of the Institute delivered the training through power point presentation and each training session was followed by interactive session between the technical expert and the participants. 

Dr NK Palte, Additional Commissioner, DAC&FW & Director in charge CIH, during the course of trainings monitored each programmes and interacted with the participants through video conferencing.
