Apropos to the news item under the headline ‘Gauhati HC summons NLA Speaker and seven suspended NPF MLAs,’ published on March 14, 2020, it is clarified that the writ petition heard was a prayer for “issuance of appropriate direction directing the Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly to dispose of the application of the petitioners dated March 24, 2019 seeking disqualification of the seven private respondents from their membership of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.”
The Kohima Bench of the Gauhati HC, in its order dated March 11, 2020, issued notice to the respondents returnable within 3 weeks, while the petitioners were ordered to “take steps within 3 days so that notice may be sent through registered post with AD card attached.”
The matter was listed again on April 3, 2020. The order further stated that “pendency of this writ petition shall not stand as a bar for the Speaker to decide the matter pending before him.”
