Aiming for a bigger positive change, the Western Sumi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK) launched the Nagaland Baptist Churches Council (NBCC) Clean Election Movement at its Centre in Akuvuto, Thahekhu on August 21 with the active participation of all Western Sumi frontal bodies.
The NBCC first launched Clean Election Campaign in June 2012. A significant step this year is that the organizers believe that many such campaigns have been organized and that it is time for actual and bigger change and for which they have replaced the word ‘campaign’ with ‘movement.’
Launching the movement with the theme ‘My Vote, My Future’, Executive Secretary (ES), WSBAK, Rev Dr Phughoto Sema said the clean election movement is not launched simply because others are doing so, but it is with renewed resoluteness to bring change in the election system. However, he added that the organizers were not expecting total change overnight but believes that positive change will be seen gradually. He read out the clean election movement pledge and offered a prayer to mark the launch of the movement.
Convenor of WSBAK NBCC Clean Election Movement, Kakheli Inato Jimo briefly highlighted the success story of Mizoram clean election campaign. She described selling votes as a sin and urged believers to be upright in electioneering system.
Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) Vice President, Tohoshe Awomi also encouraged the organizers to emulate the positive outcomes of clean election campaign in Mizoram. He expressed the hope that clean election can be practised in the state under the active leadership of the Church.
Western Sumi Kukami Hoho (WSKH) President, Vihuto Yepthomi said church leaders have huge responsibility in changing the minds of the congregation towards practising clean election.
After the programme, leaders of WSBAK, WSH, WSKH, Western Sumi Totimi Hoho, Western Sumi Students’ Union, Western Sumi Youth Front and Western Sumi Sports Association signed a pledge to practise clean election.
