Welcome address was delivered by CMA president Kuthozulu Rose. Mikha Phek DC Lomi in his speech on the topic of elimination of violence against women.
The United Nation adopted Elimination of violence against women on Nov 25, 1999. Likewise the Nagaland State Women Commission has been implementing this in all the districts. He said that womens’ right is also human right and that both and men and women are equal therefore, women should not be discriminated in every walks of life. In olden days people were practicing ‘Might is right’ but now it is human right. Women were once considered as the weaker section in the society but now women too have equal rights. Men can no longer take advantage of his physical strength. It is sad to note that Chakhesang women face more violence. And in his point of view this attitude continues to be existing because during the head hunting time men were not allow to carry out domestic and field work. Their main role was to defend the village from the enemies. So this practice had made men to shy away from doing domestic chores. He also said that we have embraced globalization, modernization and all round development but we have not really changed ourselves form this mentality of gender bias which is constructed by the society. If we want to have a holistic development then we should stop discriminating women. We have failed to recognize women’s contribution, their hard labour and their good works. He also said that preserving our tradition and culture is very important but those primitive cultures which affect us negatively should be given away. We should learn to appreciate both men and women leadership and put this into practice. He also quoted “To work is not a shame but Not to work is a shame”. He requested everyone not to differentiate men and women and not considered them secondary because they are our own flesh and blood. Lastly he encouraged the women to be brave and speak out when their rights are violated because law is there to support and give justice. He ended his speech by saying women’s right should not be suppressed because it is not only women who have framed these laws but it is by both men and women.
Rev. Dr. Yipetso Wezah, Principal Baptist Theological College, Pfutsero spoke on the topic “Peace in the home to peace in the world”.
He said there is conflict in out society because there is conflict in the family. If we cultivate peace in our family there will be peace in the society. He stressed on six following points.
1. Creates a home that allows peace to exist: we live in a world of diversity where there are differences even between husband and wife, we need to accept and adjust with each other which will ultimately help us to adjust ourselves outside
2. Positive attitude towards one another: when we see each other our attitude should be positive, then we will not see the negative in the other, if we develop positive attitude at home then we will give out positive attitude.
3. Let us be loving and sensitive towards each other needs: learn to see the needs of others even when it is not expressed. If we identify the basics needs we will know the needs of the other in general.
4. Slow to speak and quick to listen: we live in society where we criticize each other and fail to understand each others problem
5. Let us be open and not be judgmental in our family: let us learn to share and not start judging each other
6. Let us refrain using abusive words: treat each other equally respect each other and not to use abusive words in front of children. Teach them to be sincere and truthful
Later, Zhonelu Tunyi, adviser Pfutsero Town Council proposed vote of thanks.
