Congress MLAs appeal for unity

Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): Senior Congress leader and sitting MLA, KL Chishi today called all Congress party workers to lay aside their differences and make a unanimous choice to elect the new Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president. Speaking at a function at the Congress Bhawan in Dimapur today, Chishi said as a democracy people are entitled to choose according to their own conscience but there is nothing like arriving at consensus. Chishi was of the view that it is always better a contest does not take place and there be a unanimous choice for the NPCC president.

The two contending candidates for the post of NPCC president are MLA SI Jamir and incumbent party president and MLA I Imkong. The election is slated for September 17 at Kohima.

Chishi said a unanimous decision from the party workers as well as the aspirants will show the solidarity of the Congress party in the state. It will keep away the element of discord among the adversaries, he added. Chishi said the party as Opposition has greater tasks ahead and, therefore, must inculcate the spirit of oneness to sail smoothly together.

Chishi also admitted that the Congress has not been careful in its approach and maneuverings which has led to several altercations within the party. He encouraged the party workers to look forward and work towards better understanding each other.

“Let us work hard to enchant our adversary,” Chishi said in an obvious reference to the Naga People Front party. Amidst loud applause he added “We don’t know what the future holds for them…but we do know what the future hold for us.”

MLA Hewoto Awomi also maintained that the Congress must work to save the image of the party. There is nothing like coming to a unanimous decision on electing the new NPCC president, Awomi said. He added that the Congress should think of better things like forming the next government instead of building party discord.

MLA SI Jamir was also present at the function left shortly after delivering a short speech. He made no reference to the forthcoming NPCC election. The Dimapur Congress MLAs attended a function to welcome the new office bearers of the Dimapur District Congress Committee.
