CoRRP’s agitation on Nagaland reservation policy review begins today

The Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP), representing five tribes of Nagaland, has announced that it will go ahead with its proposed agitation beginning May 29, citing dissatisfaction with the State Government's response.

The CoRRP, composed of the Ao, Sema, Lotha, Angami, and Rengma tribes, was formed in August 2023 to push for a review of what it alleged to be an “unfair job reservation policy in the government sector” that has placed the five tribes at a disadvantage.

In a press release on Wednesday, the CoRRP informed that while the State Government, through the Home Commissioner, had addressed a letter dated May 25 to the Convenor of the Committee, it is going ahead with the 1st phase as the letter failed to address its concerns.

The letter, received on May 28, stated that a Committee had been constituted on May 27 to examine and submit findings on the Reservation Policy in Government employment within three months, it said.

It further requested the Five Tribes CoRRP to reconsider the proposed agitations starting from May 29 onwards.

However, the CoRRP, after consulting with the apex bodies of the five tribes, unanimously decided that the letter from the State Government “not only lacks sincere commitment but fails to address the core concerns and issues” raised in their memorandum dated September 20, 2024.

Accordingly, the Committee affirmed that its proposed phases of agitation will proceed as scheduled.

Meanwhile, in response to the developing situation, the State Government has convened a meeting with the CoRRP and the five tribes constituting the Committee on June 3 in Kohima.

The meeting, to be chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister (Home), will discuss the ‘Policy on Reservation in Government Employment,’ according to a notification from the Home Department, Nagaland.

When contacted, a CoRRP official confirmed to The Morung Express that the Committee has received the invitation but stated that the first phase of the agitation will proceed as planned.

The official also affirmed that the Committee will attend the June 3 meeting.

As per a timeline provided earlier by the Committee, the 1st phase starting May 29 will involve agitation in all district headquarters inhabited by the five tribes, along with the submission of an ‘ultimatum reminder’ to the State Government via the respective Deputy Commissioners.

A ‘peaceful dharna’ outside the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima is planned as the 2nd phase, beginning June 2.

It will be followed by the 3rd phase from June 9, involving a total shutdown in all districts inhabited by the five tribes, the CoRRP stated.

Earlier, on May 24, the CoRRP announced that it would be compelled to launch a democratic agitation if the government failed to respond to its demands.

According to the Committee, it received no response to its September 2024 representation, prompting a 30-day ultimatum on April 26, 2025, which expired on May 26.

The Committee had stated during a press conference that if the government failed to respond within the deadline, the phased agitation would be launched.

Ao Senden, ASU, SKK Inform
In connection with the beginning of the 1st phase on May 29, the Ao Senden, Angami Students’ Union (ASU), and All Sümi Students’ Union (SKK) issued separate calls urging mass participation.

In Mokokchung, a rally will begin at 10AM from the Main Police Point and proceed to the DC’s Office, and the Ao Senden has requested mass participation from the citizens.

In Zunheboto, the SKK has called upon all students from Class 10 and above in the district headquarters, as well as members of its constituent and sub-units, to join the rally at the Public Ground at 10AM.

The ASU has also urged students under its jurisdiction to take part in a peaceful rally at Old MLA Junction, Kohima, starting at 10AM.

The agitations will culminate in the submission of memorandums and an ultimatum to the Government via the respective Deputy Commissioners.

The participating bodies have stressed that it is not directed against any community but is a unified stand for equity, meritocracy, and fair opportunity for all.
