CSR spending in Nagaland hits record Rs 26.79 crore in FY2024–25

Spending nearly doubles but State remains among India's lowest recipients

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure in Nagaland rose to a record Rs 26.79 crore in the financial year 2024–25, nearly doubling from Rs 15.41 crore in the previous year, according to data tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

The figures, furnished by Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in reply to a starred question on August 3, highlighted that it increased from Rs 3.57 crore in FY2020–21, to Rs 12.46 crore in FY2021–22, Rs 13.57 crore in FY2022–23, Rs 15.41 crore in FY2023–24 and Rs 26.79 crore in FY2024–25, indicating sustained growth in CSR investments.

Meanwhile, as per the CSR portal, from which the data are taken, 44 companies undertook CSR activities in Nagaland during FY2024–25.

Sector and district-wise directions 
Health-related interventionsincluding healthcare, eradication of hunger, poverty and malnutrition, safe drinking water and sanitationaccounted for the largest share of CSR spending at Rs 14.28 crore, representing more than half of the State's total CSR expenditure. 

Education, livelihood initiatives and programmes for persons with disabilities received Rs 6.20 crore, followed by rural development (Rs 4.79 crore). 

Environmental conservation and animal welfare accounted for Rs 1.24 crore, while sports promotion received Rs 0.07 crore and gender equality, women's empowerment, old-age homes and reducing inequalities together received Rs 0.20 crore.

District-wise, Mon attracted the highest CSR expenditure at Rs 6.56 crore, followed by Kohima (Rs 5.51 crore) and Dimapur (Rs 5.17 crore). Together, the three districts accounted for nearly two-thirds of the State's CSR spending. They were followed by Peren (Rs 1.99 crore), Zunheboto (Rs 1.91 crore), Kiphire (Rs 1.77 crore), Phek (Rs 1.52 crore) and Mokokchung (Rs 1.08 crore), while Tuensang (Rs 0.57 crore), Wokha (Rs 0.51 crore) and Longleng (Rs 0.20 crore) received comparatively lower allocations.

Among individual companies, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd emerged as the largest CSR contributor in Nagaland with Rs 4.89 crore, followed by HDFC Bank Ltd (Rs 4.34 crore) and Tata AIG General Insurance Company Ltd (Rs 2.75 crore). 

Other major contributors included Bharat Forge Ltd (Rs 1.69 crore), Greenply Industries Ltd (Rs 1.41 crore), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (Rs 1.29 crore), Titan Company Ltd (Rs 1 crore), NHPC Ltd (Rs 0.99 crore) and NTPC Ltd (Rs 0.98 crore).

According to the portal's financial year comparative reports, CSR expenditure in the State had previously peaked at Rs 5.11 crore in FY2019–20, before declining to Rs 3.57 crore in FY2020–21 during the COVID-19 pandemic period. 

As noted, there has been substantial increase thereafter. 

The upward trend follows efforts by the State Government to attract greater corporate participation. 

In November 2025, Sitharaman had maintained that the 2022 Nagaland CSR Conclave proved to be a turning point, with many companies, including some without manufacturing units or service centres in the State, being persuaded to participate in CSR initiatives and consider Nagaland as a destination for meaningful interventions.

National and NE status
Despite the sharp increase, the State continued to account for only a marginal share of CSR spending nationally.

Nationally, CSR expenditure increased from Rs 26,210.95 crore in FY2020–21 to Rs 40,794 crore in FY2024–25.

Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka were the top-three destination at  Rs8,630.80Crorre, Rs 4,549.10 and Rs 3,395.43 respectively.

Within the North-East, Assam remained the largest recipient with Rs 607.04 crore, followed by Meghalaya (Rs 62.07 crore), Sikkim (Rs 54.55 crore), Arunachal Pradesh (Rs 40.06 crore), and Manipur (Rs 33.73 crore).

Only Tripura (Rs 15.89 crore) and Mizoram (Rs 14.97 crore) recorded lower CSR expenditure than Nagaland during FY2024–25.

Nagaland ranked sixth among the eight northeastern states with Rs 26.79 crore, ahead of only Tripura (Rs 15.89 crore) and Mizoram (Rs 14.97 crore).
