If everything goes well, Nagaland would soon join the rest of the country in introducing a curriculum on energy conservation in school textbooks.
Speaking at the Trainers Training Workshop for school teachers on energy conservation and its efficient use here today at Zonal Council Hall, Bendangkokba, principal director & secretary (education) said the state government will ask SCERT to produce the same for inclusion in the text books in all the schools in Nagaland.
The workshop was organized by The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) as part of the project BEACON (Building Energy Awareness on Conservation) initiated by TERI under the aegis of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India in collaboration with the Directorate of Education (School), Government of Nagaland.
During the workshop, teachers were trained on various tools and methods for energy conservation and its remedial use. Er.K.T. Wabang Ao, Chief Electrical Inspector, Department of power pointed out various steps that can be taken up at individual levels to conserve energy and use it efficiently. He also appealed all the teachers to educate students on these issues.
Stressing on the need to conserve energy, Pollemtep, joint director, directorate of education regretted that some people were very casual in using energy and adding that it is high time to realize that the burning of energy is also losing our economy and national economy. Energy is for the progress of nation, for prosperity of each and every individual and for our comfort, he said. Also stating wind and solar energy as clean energy, he said hydrogen energy is abundant but yet to be tapped to the fullest. He briefed about the fact that the children are the best ambassadors of the society, who can especially spread the message of awareness on energy conservation.
The training was conducted by Neha, associate fellow and V.K. Saju, assistant programme manager from the Educating Youth for Sustainable Development Division, TERI, New Delhi, which is headed by Ranjana Saikia. More than 25 teachers from various government and private schools attended the training.
Resource materials including a training manual titled “Doing More with Less,” a comic books titled “The Electrifying Escapades for Roshni” which throws light on how young minds set about to create awareness on energy conservation and efficiency and a flip chart titled “Energy through the Ages” depicts history of energy and its development and, along with CFL bulbs were distributed to all the participants during the workshop.
