Dimapur, July 26 (MExN): The Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) has condemned the ongoing multiple taxation and extortion activities targeting the business community in Dimapur. In a press release, DAYO highlighted the indefinite shutter down protest led by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) against these practices by various Naga political groups.
DAYO emphasized that only statutory bodies and law enforcement agencies have the authority to issue summons, and any group or entity doing so is acting illegally.
“We reaffirm that with the three new stringent criminal laws in place, we will not hesitate to file FIRs and cases to ensure that culprits are booked under the National Security Act,” stated DAYO, referencing the Home Commissioner’s empowerment.
It expressed concern that as per reports, first-generation entrepreneurs are receiving extortion notices and calls even before their signboards are installed. DAYO reiterated the December 2018 resolution of the Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, which declared that any threats or intimidation to the economic livelihood, businesses, or employment of its members would be dealt with according to the law and customary practices of the Aos.
"Illegal taxation is the root cause of factionalism and has been crippling our society for too long. The time has come to say enough is enough," the DAYO declared. DAYO has set up a helpline (8974851911) for complaints and quick responses, urging its units to remain alert for any eventualities. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of "One Government, One Tax" and pledged continued vigilance for the welfare of the people.
It further expressed support for the Police Commissionerate and believed that the issue of multiple extortions can only be permanently resolved by implementing the signed agreements of 2015 and 2017 on the Naga political issue, calling on the Government of India to bring these agreements to their logical conclusion.
"The pulse of the people yearning for development and peace in Dimapur and Nagaland as a whole should be respected by one and all," the DAYO said.
