A newly constructed Superintendent of Police (SP) Office at Police Reserve, Zunheboto, built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, has remained non-operational nearly two years after its inauguration due to critical infrastructural shortcomings.

The building, inaugurated virtually on August 7, 2023, by Deputy Chief Minister (Home and Border Affairs) Y Patton in the presence of Director General of Police Rupin Sharma, IPS, has failed to become functional despite being ready since 2019.

SP Zunheboto Dr Kupe Kupfo cited the absence of proper boundary fencing as a primary concern, warning it posed serious security risks to the functioning of the office.

“One of the primary issues is the absence of proper boundary fencing, which raises serious security risks,” Dr Kupfo said.

He added that the office handles sensitive and confidential files, and relocating without adequate security measures in place could jeopardize their safety.

Another major challenge is poor network connectivity in the area. Dr Kupfo noted that the location lacks reliable internet and communication coverage, which is essential for police operations. “We need strong and stable connectivity to maintain constant communication, respond to incidents promptly, and operate our systems effectively,” he said.

The SP further mentioned that appeals have been made to telecom companies to install towers, but progress has been hindered due to previous land-related issues in Zunheboto town.

In addition, the new building reportedly lacks adequate infrastructure such as a proper signal room and guard room. The available rooms are insufficient and congested, making it difficult for personnel to carry out daily duties efficiently.

Given these challenges, the SP office continues to function from its existing premises until the necessary infrastructural gaps are addressed.
