DC Mkg declares road blockade in Longkhum village illegal

Mokokchung, March 17 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, Mokokchung district issued an order on March 16 declaring a reported road blockade in Longkhum as “illegal.”

The DC in the order stated that earlier on March 6, it received information that the Longkhum Senso Mungdang (LSM) has imposed a “total movement ban” on the Alichen-Longkhum-Mangmetong road. 

Consequent to the report, the DC said that the district administration initiated efforts to resolve the issue “meeting with the concerned stakeholders from Longkhum village” to revoke the ban. It added that the DC had also convened an “emergency meeting” on March 10 at the Dobashi court in this regard. However, “no positive efforts ot response has been received” from the LSM and other stakeholders to resolve the issue, the order said. 

While maintaining that the road in question is Government PWD road, it stated that the act of blockading suppressed the Fundamental Right to Freedom of movement of individuals as enshrined in Article 19 of the Constitution. 

In light of the situation, the DC in the order declared the road blockading “illegal and null and void.” It also cautioned against hindering of free movement in the said road, while adding that penal action under relevant sections of the law will be initiated against any individual or group found violating the order.
