Dimapur, May 18 (MExN): The NPCC on Monday urged the state government to arrange special trains from different major cities of India and also to arrange feeder transport to help stranded people reach originating stations for onward journey to Nagaland.

In a press release issued on May 18, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) expressed concern about the plight citizens from Nagaland stranded in different parts of the country. “55 days into lockdown, many workers have lost their jobs and are out on the streets after being evicted for nonpayment of house rent. The ever looming threat of pandemic, racial attack and hunger are creating greater humanitarian crisis far beyond our imagination,” it said, while adding that “Every passing day is becoming difficult to survive for majority of our people.”

It said that the NPCC has been extending help to stranded people from the state through other state Congress units whenever they approached NPCC COVID-19 Task Force, however, with every state government in the north east arranging special trains to bring their citizens back, “the growing chorus of our people wanting to be evacuated is getting louder and louder.”

As such, the Party urged the state government to arrange special trains and feeder transport in coordination with host states to help stranded citizens reach Nagaland. It also suggested that the evacuation process should be completed within a week by deploying additional manpower as well as senior IAS officers to monitor the situation in different states and a senior to meet the urgent demands of the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

Further, the NPCC offered its assistance in coordinating with Congress ruled states to evacuate stranded people while stating that “The state government stands to lose nothing by putting up collective effort in these extraordinary times.”
