Dimapur, November 29 (MExN): In a bid to prepare dentists at facing emergencies professionally, a ‘scientific session’ was held today with the principal of Regional Dental College of Guwahati Dr A K Adhyapok, MDS, as the resource person during the 10th annual general meeting-continuing dental education. The session was organized by Indian Dental Association and was held at Highway-39, Go-Karting Purana Bazar in Dimapur.
Dr Adhyapok delivered a presentation on the topic: “Management of Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice.” He said that emergency situation can occur in practice of dentistry and a dentist should be prepared to tackle the situation.
Emergencies occur when patients opt to avail for medical treatments long overdue; when a dentist is stressed or nervous or untrained; overdose of local anesthetic; allergic reaction to certain antibiotics and painkillers; has no documentation of patients’ medical histories or have ill-equipped clinic or hospital, he said.
Dr. Adhyapok also stressed that a dentist must always evaluate whether he can handle a situation or to refer the case to another specialist. “Don’t take unnecessary risk.”
He advised the dentists present not to show the needle to patients and to inject the anesthetic very steadily. He encouraged them to be observant when a patient enters the chamber - to check his behavior and general appearance.
Emphasizing on obtaining medical history of a patient, he said a dentist ought to always ask the patient, his medical history so treatment may be administered accordingly. Also, he said, a form may be given to the patient to fill in the details.
He also asserted that obtaining the medical histories of patients can help a doctor, when cases of legal issues arise so that it can be used as evidence if situations go wrong during undergoing medical treatment.
Further, Dr. Adhyapok instructed the doctors on what kind of medical treatment should be given to diabetic patients, heart patients, asthmatic patients, pregnant women, people who suffer from hypertension, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), blood pressure and epileptics.
Earlier, while opening the session, Additional Director of Family Welfare Dr N Savino said: “Dentistry is a unique practice in the field of medical profession. It is a combination of both science and art.”
Dr A K Adhyapok is known as the ‘father of dentistry in North East India.’
