Dimapur’s oldest college holds 45th freshers social

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 29 (MExN): Dimapur Government College welcomed into its folds a new batch of students who joined the college this year at a programme held on Thursday, September 29. The 45th freshers social of DGC today was graced by none other than the Commissioner & Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, FP Solo.
Addressing the gathering, Solo shared his vision of one day turning Dimapur Government College into a multi-disciplinary model college and eventually attaining autonomous status which can also offer PG courses. For this to take shape one need to have a master plan with the active participation of all stake holders, including the college’s authority, its faculty, the students as well as the government. The college, Solo said has a lot of land with potential for further development, however fund constraints as a factor is preventing the college from achieving its development goals.
DGC is not only the oldest college in Dimapur but also has the best teaching faculty, not only in Dimapur but in the whole of the state, he added. Further, creating quality consciousness must be at the heart of the college management. Stating that three colleges from Nagaland have already been accredited by the prestigious National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), DGC is also under consideration of being assessed by the council.
While remarking on the talent displayed by the students, he said that the college has no dearth of it and encouraged the students of exploring the same. On a broader perspective, he said that according to the provisional figures of Census 2011 about 12% of the country’s population is in the age group of 18-22 years. It is imperative that more and proper concern is directed towards higher education, he added. Nagaland, he said has the paradox of a high number of educated unemployed with a low level of employability. “Broaden your horizon and mindset and look beyond,” he said while urging the students to explore employment avenues not only within the governmental set up but also outside the state, the country as well as abroad.
“If we’re to compete, we’ve to improve work culture” and this one can start by excelling in studies, he said.
Principal, Dr. Norbert Noraho while exhorting the students reminded that they are the precious resource of the college and thus become an intrinsic part of it. “Your purpose here is to pursue education, do not lose sight of your purpose… let us not neglect education in any way.” Informing of the development projects being undertake by the college at present, he said that an indoor stadium solely meant for the college is expecting completion by next year and a hostel for girls is also coming up.
The college also took the opportunity of giving away excellence awards to three students, namely Stella Sherpa, Limatemjen and Toluho Aye. Sherpa (Arts) and Limatemjen (Commerce) were awarded for excelling in this year’s final degree examinations while Aye is a martial arts expert, who is also a member of Faith In Action which is making waves at the popular reality talent show ‘India’s Got Talent’.
