DLSAs join ‘World No Tobacco Day’ campaigns

Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): The District Legal Services Authorities observed World No Tobacco Day on May 31 by organizing poster campaign with Legal Literacy Clubs (LLCs) and holding awareness programmes across all the districts of Nagaland. 
 
Phek: The Phek DLSA in collaboration with National Tobacco Control Programme, Phek commemorated the event at conference hall, District Hospital, Phek. 

Mezivolu T Therieh, Chairman, Phek DLSA in her keynote address stated that tobacco kills over 5.4 million people every year. Therefore, she called concerted effort to address the menace and effectively enforce COTPA Act in Nagaland. 
She urged the gathering to create knowledge among the general masses to reduce tobacco consumption and engage stakeholders to fight for tobacco control. 

Legal Literacy Club members present were encouraged to create awareness amongst their friends, families and society on the harmful effects of tobacco so that we live a healthy life.

Dr Wethselo Mero, Sr Specialist, DH, Phek gave a presentation on the theme, “Tobacco and lung health.” He sensitized that consumption of tobacco reduces sperm fertility and premature defective delivery, remarking that Nagaland stands 6th at the national level in consumption of tobacco.

Sekhotso Rokha, Panel Lawyer, Phek DLSA, spoke on COTPA ACT 2003 by stressing on prohibition of sale of tobacco to minors, prohibition of advertisement of tobacco and its products, prohibition of sale of tobacco within 100 yards around educational institution.

Dimapur: In Dimapur, the DLSA held the event in eight LLCs by holding Poster campaign in the schools and around vicinity. Short legal awareness programme on ill effects of tobacco consumption was also conducted. The LLCs from Government High School Sarbura, Government High School Lengrijan, MGM Higher Secondary School, Government High School Burma Camp, Government High School Diphupar (B), St. Stephen’s Hr. Sec. School, Christian Hr. Sec School and John Hr. Sec. Resl. School took part in the event. 

Kohima: LLCs under Kohima DLSA also held poster campaign, skit, street play and legal awareness on Anti Tobacco Act.

Mon: Mon DLSA commemorated the day at St. Joseph School, Mon. N Mannon (Project Assistant) spoke on "Tobacco and it's effects" and Angun (Panel Lawyer) on "Right to Education.” The programme was attended by 153 participants including the teaching staffs. 

Mokokchung: Mokokchung DLSA also observed Anti-tobacco Day poster campaign with the LLC schools in and around the school campus led by LLC incharge PL Maongtula n PL Mapujungla. 

Peren: Meanwhile, Peren DLSA organized street plays, district pamphlets to attendees to mark the event.

Tuensang: Tuensang DLSA conducted poster campaign at 10 schools i.e. Loyem Memorial High School, Eklavya Model Residential School, 3rd NAP Unit High School, St. Joseph’s School, GHSS Thangjam, GHSS Tuensang, GHS Chaba, GHS Hakushang, Baptist Thangyen School and St. John’s Higher Secondary School. Club members participated and carried out the poster campaign in and around their respective campus and some LLC also held short programmes.

Zunheboto: The Zunheboto DLSA held street rally with LLC members from Government higher Secondary schools.
